Hydrogen is indispensable as a long-term storage medium so that photovoltaic systems or wind turbines do not have to be switched off when there is too much sun or wind. For this reason, ways are being sought to produce hydrogen cost-effectively and use it as an energy source when needed. The ERNST Umformtechnik GmbH project together with Offenburg University of Applied Sciences is providing good solutions to this problem. A prototype for a low-cost electrolyzer for hydrogen production is currently being built together. The aim is to be able to manufacture such devices in large-scale industrial production in the foreseeable future with low material input in order to make the conversion of surplus renewable energy into hydrogen and back into usable electricity economically feasible.
